I never thought I'd be into tapas. Honestly, I had always thought tapas were such a tease compared to traditional restaurants where you order appetizers and entrees. I guess my first time at Bartaco left a bad taste in my mouth after eating their bite-sized tacos and drinking their expensive margaritas. But now, I have changed my mind about tapas, and even about Bartaco. I say all this to give a huge endorsement for The Iberian Pig, a Spanish-themed tapas restaurant in Downtown Decatur.

JD and I have been to the Iberian Pig quite a few times. It's in a great location in the Decatur Square. It's the perfect place to sit outside and eat while catching some rays, or inside, people watch, catch some live entertainment in the Square, and also grab something else right afterwards like dessert at Jeni's, or window shop at a clothing store, crafts store or furniture store nearby. There may be a short wait because of how popular it is, but it has never taken longer than 15 minutes for us to be seated. I like Bartaco.. now, but The Iberian Pig is the restaurant that really made me a fan of tapas and charcuterie. What I like about it is you can just "keep em' coming" with a bunch of small inexpensive plates. So that means you can try a little bit of everything as opposed to only having one appetizer and one entree and a possible dessert later if you can stomach it.

The first time we went, we tried the empanadas de carne and the choripan. JD's favorite is the (B.W.D) bacon wrapped dates. The empanadas were really good. Not what I expected at all; they tasted better than empanadas or tacos at a typical Tex-Mex spot. Very flavorful and well-seasoned. The choripan was also something I did not expect; it's basically a sausage-dog on a brioche bun. Very tasty as well. But after trying the bacon wrapped dates, I can definitely say this is my favorite of all the tapas. They have this sort of sweet, honey-glaze to them that set them off! Chef's kiss! A must try!

Since there are so many to choose from on the menu, we make it a goal to try a new tapa. On our following visits to The Iberian Pig, JD had the Iberico mac n' cheese and he told me it's definitely his second favorite, so we made sure to get it this time. They bring it out hot served in a baking pan, so you have to be careful because you will definitely burn yourself going in for it too fast. When you put your fork into it and cut out a bite, it steams. Layers upon layers of gooey cheese topped with breadcrumbs. Blow it a bit before you put it in your mouth — instant cheesy satisfaction! Hands down, one of the best mac n' cheese dishes I have ever had. We also had the patatas bravas, which are diced potatoes topped with salsa bravas and aioli, and we had the seasonal green beans. I wasn't a fan of the green beans. JD loved them. He doesn't usually get vegetables by themselves, so I'm glad he had a go-to veggie plate.

Overall, this place is absolutely amazing. I love the Spanish-theme. The service is impeccable. The food and the vibe are spectacular. Not to mention they have great house drinks. Make sure to try it if you in the mood for a nice sangria. I highly recommend going to pig out at The Iberian Pig in Decatur if you are ever on the eastside!
