There's just so much food on the eastside! And we only had to drive for like 7 minutes. We had a craving for breakfast but I told bae that I wanted something different and outdoors. Huskey's Kitchen, which is just north of Gresham Park, was a really good pick.
Huskey's is the definition of 'homey'. The restaurant is nestled in a suburban area, so there was no traffic and no crowd, especially for a Sunday morning breakfast spot. The restaurant has a wooden interior, which, in my opinion, makes it comfortable and laid back. We were greeted upon entering and we were told that the menu is on the QR codes on the table and that's where we would also place our order. We say in these wood booths next to the screen where it was sort of like sitting outside. Bae ordered the Cheesecake French Toast with Parmesan Cheese Grits on the side, and I ordered the Harlem Style Chicken & Waffles.
JD really enjoyed the cheesecake french toast. I liked it as well. Honestly, I love french toast, pancakes, or waffles that are so flavorful that you don't need t smother them in syrup to make them taste better. Huskey's did a good job there. They were fluffy and the fruit accompanied by the sugar powder set it off sweetness quite well I did use a bit of syrup, but I didn't need to soak it in the syrup for it them to taste good by themselves. I think they did a bit much by adding the inedible blue flower as a garnish. But it was nice presentation; makes for a good photo. Accompanying the french toast was the not-so-good parmesan cheese grits. JD had one taste of it and decided that he wasn't going to eat the rest of it. When I tried it, I had a few spoonful, but I also thought it wasn't good. The grits weren't bad, but it was over-seasoned by the parmesan cheese. The grits had an overwhelming amount of parmesan cheese taste that even enough salt and pepper did not cover.
I definitely got something unexpected when I ordered the Harlem Style Chicken & Waffles. Instead of a traditional waffle with a chicken wings or tenders on the side, the chicken is breaded with the waffle. Very interesting concept! It was topped with a sweet glaze and accompanied by strawberries and blueberries. I got three breaded tenders. A whole lot of meat! I was so surprised that when our order arrived I said to bae, "Ok, where's the waffle?" It was so much chicken combined with the bread that I could not finish all three of them. I ate about 2 and a half. I ordered a side order of shrimp and grits. This was so much better than the parmesan cheese grits, seriously! Nicely buttered, and a good amount of shrimp. I added a bit of salt, but it did not need much. JD isn't a fan of shrimp so he didn't have any of it, but if he did he would agree that it was much better.
Overall, I give Huskey's a thumbs up! Great, prompt service, great ambiance with some old school r&b playing that wasn't so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. Good parking situation and no wait. It's a great breakfast and brunch spot on the eastside and it is also Black-owned. They also have plenty to choose from on their menu. I don't like when places look better than the food tastes, but this place honestly matches with vibe with a quality food selection. The parmesan grits could have been better, and the chicken & waffles was a bit too bready. But other than that, wonderful experience. A bit on the pricier side. Our orders came up to about $50. Try Huskey's in the cut. Get you a decent breakfast, enjoy the vibe and get full in Candler-McAfee.
