Bae told me about the new Rreal Tacos location that opened recently in his neck of the woods (Downtown Decatur). He was excited to go because he really loves Mexican food and he and his friends are huge fans of Bartaco, so we made a date night of it. We got there around 8pm. Upon our arrival, bae was a bit agitated because the parking situation is crazy. They have a pretty sizable parking lot they share with another restaurant, but it gets full quickly. Bit to mention that it's paid parking. We were jammed in the lot for a minute waiting for the traffic and looking for a spot, but we got super lucky and found a spot directly in front of the entrance. We actually didn't pay for the parking. Thankfully we didn't get a ticket or a boot (not recommended).
I was immediately blown away with the presentation of the restaurant. We had on some decent outfits, but we were not dressed up. It was super elegant; dimly lit, decorated in accordance with the Mexcian theme, everyone else was dressed very well, the music was not quiet but it wasn't too loud that you couldn't have a conversation. I really liked the ambiance. We were then greeted by the hostess and we were told that there would be a 20 minute wait for a table, which we were okay with. While we waited for a table, we decided to head over to the bar to have drinks. I had the Rreal Margarita (Tequila blanco, triple sec, agave & lime/ $9) and bae got a Sangria (Cabernet Sauvignon, rum & peach/ $11). I loved my margarita! I am starting to think they gave me the Peach Margarita instead of the Rreal Margarita because of the sweet peach-like stuff on the rim. Bae really liked his sangria as well. We both sipped on our drinks and waited for a few minutes outside until we were called for our table. Within 5 or so minutes, our table was ready. We were seated by a lovely Latina server. For an appetizer I ordered Crispy Avocado.
I wanted to try something different. It came with a cilantro dressing. It was pretty good. It's literally fried avocados. I loved the sauce even more :) Bae ordered a Birria Taco, a Carnitas Taco and a Beef Taco. They were all unseasoned. The meat was tender but not seasoned at all. He had to use the sauces provided on the table to give each of the tacos some flavor. I ordered the Fish Taco and the Quesabirria. The Quesabirria came with consommé. Bae was upset that his Birria Taco did not not come with consomme, but instead they charge $3 if you want it with the tacos, so he just dipped his tacos in my consommé. The quesabirria wasn't bad, very juicy and meaty, but again, not very seasoned, so I'm glad I had the consomme and the remaining cilantro dressing to give it some flavor. I also had The Tempura Fish Taco (Tempura fish on flour tortilla with coleslaw and chipotle mayo). This was actually VERY good! The chipotle mayo sauce on it gave it the zest it needed.
Overall, not a bad experience at Rreal Tacos, but the food could have definitely been better. It wasn't expensive either, but there are similar taco joints around Atlanta like Bartaco where you can get the consomme at no cost and the meals are cheaper. It's a good vibe though. Great music, quick and friendly service. Very clean. The drinks were ON POINT! But I don't know if we will be going back just because we have had better tacos elsewhere. What do you think of Rreal Tacos?
